What is a tantalum polymer capacitor?

A tantalum polymer capacitor is a type of electrolytic capacitor that uses a solid conductive polymer as the electrolyte instead of the traditional manganese dioxide. It has a tantalum anode and a tantalum oxide dielectric.

Tantalum polymer capacitors have some advantages over other types of electrolytic capacitors, such as lower equivalent series resistance (ESR), higher ripple current capability, better frequency response, and longer lifetime. Additionally, polymer capacitors feature a hight volumetric efficiency that allows smaller devices to have higher capacitance values.

What are tantalum polymer capacitors used for?

Tantalum polymer capacitors are used for applications that require high capacitance, low ESR, and stable performance over a wide temperature range. Some examples are power supply filtering and decoupling, audio and video equipment, portable devices, and automotive electronics. They are also used in consumer electronics and industrial applications.

Panasonic POSCAP™ Tantalum Polymer Solid Electrolyte Chip Capacitors offer stable capacitance at high frequency and temperature, with low-ESR/ESL. These capacitors utilise a sintered tantalum anode with a proprietary high-conductivity polymer cathode. Panasonic's innovative construction and processing yields one of the lowest ESR levels in Tantalum-Polymer Capacitor technology, while exhibiting excellent performance in high frequency applications.

POSCAP Capacitors are available in various, compact package sizes for a small PCB footprint while offering high volumetric efficiency for capacitance. In addition, Panasonic’s POSCAP parts demonstrate high reliability and high heat resistance, making them the ideal chip capacitor for digital, high-frequency devices and more.
